I got to drive it for about 25,000 miles over 2 years and enjoy it.
I wish I could have kept it for the rest of my life, but things happen. I got into an accident and it is now total ed. But I loved it dearly and hope to have something as special again soon.
If you have any pictures or videos of the car, please send them to me.

I’ve always loved that color on that car... Sorry about the accident.

I’ve always loved this generation and that is a great color combination. Any significant maintenance issues? How was ride/build quality during your ownership?

What a beautiful color for a beautiful car. Too bad about the accident. Less M5s in the world is a loss for all of us.

Thanks man. I’ll see if the stars align again for me to buy one.
Definitely would do it again.

I’ll always remember how nice it drove, it’s almost like black art . The transmission just clicks in place like a Miata.
Hope you don’t have to go through too much trouble for them to pay you out fairly.

The ride was on the stiff side, but not uncomfortable.
There was a minor rattle I couldn’t figure out the source of, but other that that, it was very well put together and solid. The leather was a little prone to scratches and scuffs. All in all, n othing felt flimsy.
No major break downs or issues. It was maintenance intensive, but it ran great as long as everything was done. Because the p revious owners took great care of the car, it was not bad.
I had to replace an injector and sparks to fix a misfire. AC blower motor , brakes, rotors, fluid flu shes. Nothing out of the ordinary.

good examples turn up here in SoCal from time to time... keep looking. I’ll post here if I run across one in LA that looks good.

Thanks!
I live in Canada and would prefer to get a rust free example of a fun car - E39 M5 or not. So LA cars would be dope!

A friend of mine had one just like that for a couple years as a daily, it was excellent. Sad to see it go

Oops, posted my comment on your new DD thread before I even saw this.
I had deep feelings (purely platonic) for your car from afar.

I’m glad you’re okay! That was an absolutely beautiful car!
I’m told v8 versions of the E39 did not have rack and pinion steering. How was the steering and feedback? We used to deride recirculating ball steering for its lack of feel, but in the age of EPAS everything, was the lack of feedback even noticeable given the modern context?

Man that color combo was perfect!

No complains about the steering.
Responsive, direct, tad bit heavy at slow speeds but fantastic at high speeds.
In modern context, it’s head and shoulders above say a regular F80 3 series. Regular cars now feel artificially overboosted to me.

Thanks man. That is probably the best car I’ll ever own.
I h ope so too. Im really unhappyw how insurance is treating me.

I get the whole dragoning thing now. Not that I would do it. But I didn’t know I could like a car that much before the M5 lol

Yesss. It was literally my dream spec.

In Ontario we have no-fault insurance, meaning your own company will pay for your compensation and they net out at the end of the day. S o they will try to cheap you out on it, it’s a shitty system . Just stay persistent with the adjustor , and do your research about comparable replacements.

Unfortunately he sold it a few years ago, primarily based on the immense upkeep costs

That’s too bad. But I know how that goes.
I was definitely spending quite a bit.

Hi! I’m that friend. It was a fantastic car, 2002 LeMans Blue over Caramel extended leather. I put 45,000 miles on it in 3 years. It performed everything a daily driver should, from shuttling 5 people around, to autocross, to bombing thru the snow of la ke effect winters. Many good memories were had in that car. Alas I was swayed by the life style of slow car fast when I purchased a very beat up e36 328is. I ended up selling the M5, and replacing it with an R56 Mini S with every dealer upgrade possible. Then the inline 6 bug bit me and now I’m in an e36 M3.
The M5 went to a great home, an enthusiasts upgrading from his 540i 6 speed to an M5. He has sent me some photos and has been doing a great job improving it and making it his special car.
I hope you find something special to replace the M5. You have the unique opportunity to find something new without the regret of having to get rid of another dream car.

I was said friend. Put 48k miles on it in almost 3 years. Put about 10k into maintenance and fixing it. Another 8k of fuel. 12k more in tires, insurance and painting it twice. Best car I will probably own for a long time, but not good on the wallet with a 100 mile commute. Nothing matches it as an all-around great car (daily, winter beater, race car, show car).

If you have the bank, lookup EAG in Ohio. They always have top quality low mileage E39's

Damn I’m sorry to hear about that. I was there earlier this year with my Z3 Coupe and my best buddy just lost his E46 330Ci that was his first car (had it prob 8 years at this point). Not a good year but hopefully you find something new. Unfortunately I couldn’t afford another coupe at the moment but hopefully in a few years I can save and get an S52. For now I got a midget

I owned one for a few years while living in Dubai and absolutely loved my car. I’ve missed it every day since moving back to San Diego. I can totally feel what you must be going through. These cars become very personal, almost like a pet.

12k on tires? Wow haha
Y ou definitely had more fun with the car than I did. It does the more maintenance the more you use it.
Ad you're right, nothing matches it.

Sorry to hear, what a beautiful car. Perfect color combo too.
Any thoughts on what you might replace it with? Would encourage something sufficiently different so it doesn’t just erase over the memory of this beauty you had - and to build new and different memories with instead. But an E39 M5 is pretty much up there and is as good as it gets, I can only imagine finding a worthy replacement will be so difficult for so many reasons.

Thank you, that is exactly how I feel.
I don’t want another E39 M5, unless it’s LeMans Blue on Caramel or at least another special color. But I’d prefer to get something else.
I don’t quite know what yet. I’m thinking of a Z4M or E46 M3. But I really want a V8 coupe/convertible/targa a
round $20 - $
25
k CAD. Or a powerful two seater. T
he Corvette doesn’t quite cut it because interiors. Do you have any ideas?
![]() 07/06/2020 at 12:12 |

Get an E92 M3.
![]() 07/06/2020 at 12:46 |
|
Good idea. I like them, but I’d like to drive one first.
I’ve heard that they aren’t special to drive unless you rev them out.
The E39 M5 had torque FOR DAYS from just 2k ripems.
![]() 07/06/2020 at 12:56 |

It doesn’t have a lot of low down torque, but get it to ~3500 and it pulls pretty hard.
